Historic downtown firehouse
may move,
an article from
The Gazette,
reports that the Colorado
Springs Fire Department
searched for months for a
plot of land downtown on
which to build a firehouse
to replace Station
1. Unable to find anything
affordable, the department
recently decided to put up a
$6 million firehouse where
the two-story, brick Station
No. 1 now stands. The old
fire station may be heading
two football fields down the
road. According to Deputy
Fire Chief Dan Raider, the
plan is to move the historic
building to a center island
that would be built at Pikes
Peak Avenue and Weber, where
it might end up being a
restaurant or some other
business. Raider said, "We
didn't want to tear down one
of our city's great
buildings." Adding that
taxpayers won't be picking
up the estimated $500,000 to
$750,000 tab for moving
Station No. 1 under the
department's plan. The
plans still need to be
approved by City Council.
Deputy City Manager Steven
Cox said the old firehouse
could attract neighboring
businesses to a street
mostly lined by parking lots
in that area. He added,
"The goal is create a
prominent revival to an area
of the city that has
lagged."

Existing-home sales edged up
in May,
an article from
MSNBC.com,
reports that according to
the National Association of
Realtors, sales of existing
single-family homes and
condominiums rose by 2% to
an annual rate of 4.99
million units last month.
The median price of existing
homes sold in May dropped to
$208,600, a fall of 6.3%
from a year ago. The
strength in sales reflected
gains in several parts of
the country. Sales were up
5.5% in the Midwest, 4.6% in
the Northeast and 2% in the
West. Senior economist for
the Realtors, Paul Bishop,
said that for the past few
months sales have been
rebounding in parts of the
country that had been
hardest-hit by the housing
bust, while sales have
weakened in some areas that
formerly had been immune
from the overall downturn.
