Financial literacy among top
assets for young workers,
an article from the
Colorado Springs Business
Journal, reports
that according to David
White, executive vice
president of marketing for
the Colorado Springs
Economic Development Corp,
“Financial literacy plays an
important role in attracting
businesses to the
community. It is vital to
El Paso County, as we
compete with other cities in
the U.S. and around the
world, that students and
graduates have an
understanding of finances
and basic economics.”
Through the Pikes Peak
Workforce Center's Youth
Council, Lois Carlock, education
and event manager at Ent
Federal Credit Union,
teaches high school students
about saving, investing,
avoiding the pitfalls of
credit cards and how to shop
for car insurance. She
said, “Students have to know

Mortgage Brokers Take Jobs
Advising Anxious Borrowers,
an article from the
Real Estate Journal,
reports that with mortgage
defaults increasing and
lending volumes
falling, some former brokers
and loan officers have
switched to a new
occupation: counseling
borrowers who are trying
to avoid foreclosure.
Congress approved
legislation that was then
signed into law by President
Bush in December
which provides $180 million
of federal funding this year
for counseling aimed at
helping borrowers avoid
foreclosure. State
agencies, mortgage lenders
and private foundations also
help fund a large variety of
organizations that offer
advice to borrowers.
According to the National
Foundation for Credit
Counseling, there are about
1,440 housing counselors
certified by that group, up
about 25% from last year.
