Mortgage Brokers Take Jobs Advising Anxious Borrowers, an article from the Real Estate Journal, reports that with mortgage defaults increasing and lending volumes falling, some former brokers and loan officers have switched to a new occupation: counseling borrowers who are trying to avoid foreclosure.  Congress approved legislation that was then signed into law by President Bush in December which provides $180 million of federal funding this year for counseling aimed at helping borrowers avoid foreclosure.  State agencies, mortgage lenders and private foundations also help fund a large variety of organizations that offer advice to borrowers.  According to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, there are about 1,440 housing counselors certified by that group, up about 25% from last year.
