City mulling options for Fire Station 1, an article from The Colorado Springs Business Journal, reports that next year's city budget includes a proposal to sell Fire Station 1 and build a new station at a different location.  The city estimates that the sale of the existing building might bring as much as $1.2 million.  Interim City Manager Mike Anderson dismissed the concerns of those who fear that the building might be demolished.  Anderson said that the station is a "beautiful historic structure" ideally suited for adaptive re-use.  Local architect Mike Collins said the building ought to be retained and renovated.  Collins said, "It's a big site, and there's plenty of room to build an addition to the north or east and give the Fire Department what they need."

Bill seeks to curb abusive mortgage lending, an article from USA Today, reports that Rep. Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, introduced legislation that would restrict lending practices partly blamed for the nationwide surge in mortgage defaults and foreclosures.  Frank's bill is designed to protect future borrowers, not the estimated 2.5 million borrowers whose monthly costs are expected to jump over the next 18 months when their adjustable-rate mortgages reset.  In a statement, Floyd E. Stoner, executive director for congressional relations and public policy at the American Bankers Association said that the bill "would increase costs and decrease choices for consumers" because it would mean more regulations for banks.  According to Kurt Pfotenhauer, senior vice president for government affairs at the Mortgage Bankers Association, the bill would "foster more confusion in the marketplace for borrowers and lenders alike" because it would allow standards to vary from state to state.
